About Lossy Compression

Lossy Compression is a free, fast, browser-based tool that reduces the file size of your photos without visibly degrading quality. Powered by modern Canvas APIs and highly-tuned encoders, it lets you compress JPG, PNG and WEBP images in seconds — all locally on your device. Whether you're preparing images for a blog, an online store, an email attachment, or a mobile app, the compressor gives you a smaller file that still looks great, and lets you see the exact size savings before you download.

Under the hood, Lossy Compression uses lossy or near-lossless algorithms depending on the format you pick. JPG files benefit from adjustable quality settings that trade a small amount of visual fidelity for dramatically smaller size. PNG files use quantised palettes and structural optimisation. WEBP combines the best of both, delivering visually identical output at roughly 30% smaller size than JPG. You can preview the size savings before you download, so you always know exactly what you're getting from every image you process.

Common use cases for this tool include: optimising website images for faster page loads and better Google Core Web Vitals scores, compressing photos for WhatsApp, Telegram or email where attachment limits apply, shrinking screenshots for Slack or documentation, preparing images for social media where every kilobyte counts, reducing dataset sizes for machine-learning pipelines, and archiving old photos to save cloud storage bills or fit more shots on a phone.

Because everything happens in your browser, your images are never uploaded to a server. That means faster processing (no upload/download round-trip), no queue times even when we're busy, and total privacy — perfect for confidential product shoots, medical scans, private family photos or client work covered by NDAs. There's no signup, no watermark on the output, and no daily limit. Bring one image or a batch of one hundred; the tool handles both with the same ease, and everything is completely free forever.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lossy Compression lossless?

You can pick your quality level (10–100%). At 90–100% quality the compression is essentially lossless. Lower quality trades detail for smaller file size.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All compression happens directly in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

What image formats can I compress?

JPG, PNG, WEBP, and BMP are supported for input. You can also convert between these formats while compressing.

Is there a file-size limit?

Up to ~50 MB per image works reliably in most browsers. Very large files may require more device memory.

Can I compress many images at once?

Yes. Upload multiple images and they will all be compressed with the same settings. Download individually or all at once.
